Dear parents and guardians,
A religious sister and former high school principal for many decades told a gathering of Church formation leaders that the task of the catechist is "to provide opportunities for children to encounter the living Lord Jesus Christ" and develop a relationship with Him and His Church.
OLMC CFF is about so much more than educating children in the Catholic faith, as if faith is just another subject they must learn alongside math, social studies, and English. OLMC CFF is about the mission of making young disciples by helping your children discover the truth, goodness, and beauty of God, and by supporting you in your sacred calling to form your children as followers of Christ.
OLMC CFF uses excellent, Church-approved catechetical resources, but what's more essential is our team of dedicated and devoted catechists committed to offering opportunities for your children to 1) encounter the Lord Jesus Christ, 2) grow in their understanding of His love for them, and 3) be equipped and inspired to follow Him as active members of His Church.
We recognize that the Holy Spirit is the true Teacher, and we are privileged to serve Him and support your families on their journey of Christian discipleship.
CFF uses Loyola Press' Christ Our Life as our primary catechetical text. The content for each grade builds on the previous year’s focus and the four pillars found in the Catechism. Each grade focuses on these topics:
First Grade1. Trinity2. Baptism 3. Salvation 4. Love 5. Basic prayers / Introduction to the Mass | Second Grade1. The Church & Mary2. Reconciliation & the Eucharist 3. Scripture in Christian Life 4. Living God's love 5. Mass and how to receive the sacrament
Third Grade1. Catholic Faith2. Vocations 3. Bible Stories 4. Response to God 5. Apostle's Creed & Devotions | Fourth Grade1. Eternity & communion of Saints2. Reconciliation & healing 3. Parts of the Bible 4. Commandments & Beatitudes 5. Kinds of prayers - Rosary, etc.
Fifth Grade1. Paschal Mystery2. Sacraments 3. Scripture in Worship 4. The Commandments 5. Liturgy | Sixth Grade1. Perfection of God2. Roots of the Sacraments & Symbols 3. Old Testament 4. The Sacred 5. Psalms |
CFF Sacrament Preparation
“The sacraments are efficacious signs of grace, instituted by Christ and entrusted to the Church, by which divine life is dispensed to us. The visible rites by which the sacraments are celebrated signify and make present the graces proper to each sacrament. They bear fruit in those who receive them with the required dispositions.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1131)
Children prepare for the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist beginning in first grade CFF. They celebrate the sacraments in the latter part of second grade CFF.
In addition to weekly Sunday CFF sessions, sacrament preparation includes two evening Parent Sessions and two Parent & Child Sacrament Retreats during the child's second-grade year.
